Acknowledgments
FIFTY-THREE years ago Mrs. Elizabeth Stow Brown published a 70 page History of Nutley. Through the years this “little green book” has been used by teachers, high school and college students for reference. It is now a “collector’s item.” Since that time much local history has been kept alive by our weekly newspaper, The Nutley Sun. The succeeding editors Johnson Foy, Russell Hay, Ralph E. Heinzen have published articles of interest to our townspeople. The present editor and publisher, Frank Orechio, has included a feature column entitled “Know Your Town - People, Places and Things.”
Much appreciation is due to the many writers of these articles, reprints of which are included in this compilation. Special note should be made of the contributions of Frank Speer whose collection of Nutleyana is extensive.
Many thanks are due to Ernest Whynall of The Nutley Sun for the photographs of the oldest houses and churches of Nutley.
This volume does not cover many of our town departments or activities. Enough material is on hand, covering sports, parks, ethnic groups, business and industry, to be included in a second volume.
Special thanks are due to the J. B. Lippincott Publishing Company for the use of the poem, “Indian Children”; to the town officials whose records were consulted for many articles and, to Dorothy de St. Clement for her poem “I Love to Live in Nutley.”
Personal thanks were expressed to the late Marion L. Lewis whose encouragement inspired the writer to collect the material for this volume.
To all who have helped in any way, deep appreciation is offered.
