(Dec. 29, 2004) -- Local history buffs Ed Stecewicz and John Demmer were unanimously accepted as president and vice president, respectively, at the Nutley Historical Society election held today.

"I plan to continue interviewing Nutley residents for oral histories," said the newly elected president.

"An exhibit called 'A Tribute to Ann Troy' is planned this spring and anyone wishing to share memories of Miss Troy is encouraged to contact the Nutley Museum," Stecewicz said.

Demmer, who is also town historian, said he "would like to thank those who came out to support me."

Many events are being scheduled of the new year at the museum and Nutley schools are encouraged to book school tours.

"Nutley is a unique and wonderful town, rich with history, and I am excited to help preserve its past and hopefully contribute to is future," Demmer said.

"It is a pleasure to have town historian John Demmer as vice president," said Stecewicz. "His knowledge and interest in Nutley History will only be an asset."

The Nutley Museum opened in 1954. The idea for a place for memorabilia was first suggested by Elizabeth Stow Brown in her 1907 book The History of Nutley.

Nutley educator Ann Troy with the encouragement of then-Mayor William Jernick founded the Nutley Historical Society on March 5, 1945.

It was not until 1954 that the Church Street School was made available to the society.

Subsequent to the election, Doug Eisenfelder was named interim treasurer and Eleanor Slomkowski joined the board of directors.
